The FMB Hockey League entered its fifth season with financial backing from First Merchant Bank (FMB) on Saturday when the 2017 edition kicked off with a six-a-side contest at the Hockey Stadium in Blantyre.

The bank started bankrolling the league in 2013 to the tune of K1.2 million which was increased to K2.5 million last year.

“We are happy with the progress the competition has made so far. All genders are involved, resources are utilised to the maximum and competition is high among teams,” said FMB marketing manager Widdey Nsona in front of the bank’s head of human resource and administration Nargis Khan and Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) president Tochi Gill.

HAM general secretary Chigomezgo Thindwa said FMB’s continued sponsorship is a testament to the enduring partnership between the bank and the country’s hockey fraternity.

“It is through the FMB leagues that the players selected for the national team honed their skills,” he said. n
