FMB has increased sponsorship for Mpingwe Sports Club (MSC) Cricket Tournament to K2.5 million from last year’s K1 million.

During cheque presentation in Blantyre yesterday, the bank’s head of marketing Sylvia Mataka said the raise is in appreciation for the organisers’ and participating teams’ good conduct during last year’s event.

“We are pleased to increase sponsorship from K1 million to K2.5 million. It was not a hard decision to make as they organised the tournament very well last year and we have seen the game thriving with teams exercising fair play,” Mataka said.

“Moreover, as we are celebrating 20 years of existence, we felt to be a little bit generous to these people because they have supported us. As a corporate citizen, we would like to develop different sporting activities in Malawi and cricket is no exception.”

However, she pleaded with competition organisers to get more indigenous Malawians into the sport.

While appreciating the sponsorship increase, MSC sports director Abdul Wahab Jagot said they will always give chance to more Malawians to play in the competition.

According to Jagot, the tournament, which has nine teams from MSC and one from Oriental Cricket Club (OCC), will run for at least four weeks, starting this coming Sunday at MSC and (OCC). The finals are expected on October 25. n
