FMB K100 million robbery suspect dies

Peter Perekani Malunga, one of the key suspects in connection to a robbery of about K100 million (US$222 222) that took place at First Merchant Bank (FMB) on December 23 2014, has died.

Malunga died around 1am today at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.fmb-bank

National police deputy spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa has confirmed Malunga’s death.

Gondwa said when Malawi Prison Service (MPS) referred Malunga to police who took him to the hospital, he was complaining of pneumonia.

“He was taken to the hospital where he was admitted yesterday and it is around 1am today that he died. Currently, we are just waiting for postmortem to find out the cause of the death,” said Gondwa.

The 48-year-old Malunga who hailed from Musa Magasa Village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre was expected to appear before Blantyre First Grade Magistrate Court today to answer a charge of giving false information to a person employed in a public service after he was caught at Mwanza Boarder trying to flee the country using a South African passport.
