Merchant Bank (FMB) yesterday closed the Friends of Limbani fundraising initiative with a donation of K1.8 million (US$4 369), the medical shortfall for journalist Limbani Moya to travel to India for kidney transplant.

Friends of Limbani targeted to raise K10 million. Several companies and individuals have contributed to the amount, but by yesterday, the group had a deficit of K1.8 million.

Speaking in an interview after making the donation, FMB head of marketing Sylvia Nankwenya-Mataka said the bank decided to meet the balance so that the journalist gets medical treatment in time.

“There are two issues which have prompted us to meet the huge deficit. The first is that we are talking of the health of a person and we cannot relax when our friend is in pain. Second, FMB is where it is because of the media and the media comprises journalists. Limbani is one of them and we know he has contributed to our success in one way or the other,” said Nankwenya-Mataka.

Anthony Kasunda, who was heading the fundraising team, said they are overwhelmed by the love Malawians—among them Vice-President Saulos Chilima—have shown to Moya.

Meanwhile, a well-wisher, who does not want to be identified, has donated K1 million, saying “although the target has already been met, Moya is going very far away where he will need a lot of money”.
