Fochta opens technical centre

Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education Training Authority (Teveta) has reaffirmed its commitment to working with private vocational schools nationwide because they complement government’s efforts to promote skills development.

Speaking on Wednesday during an official opening of Friends of Claude Ho in Thyolo Association (Fochta) Vocational Centre in Luchenza, Teveta board chairperson Gilbert Chilinde said their office was encouraged to learn about Fochta’s initiative.

He said it was the wish of government to see to it that youths in the country acquire different skills that empower them to earn a living than waiting for employment.

In his remarks, Fochta chairperson Labana Stevens said the vocational centre was established to support young people who could not be selected to public universities.

Currently, three programme are on offer, namely: information and communication technology (ICT), carpentry and joinery and tailoring.

Thyolo district commissioner Charles Thombozi commended Fochta for establishing the centre which he said was a plus in as far as skills development was concerned as the district had already three centres that were striving to help the youth attain different skills.

Fochta was established in 2003 by co-founders Claude Ho from Australia (patron and board member) and Stevens as well as Dr Leopold Buhendwa. The institution has since supported 1 984 students in both secondary and tertiary education. n
