As a way of promoting girls’ education, the Foundation for Community Livelihood and Development (Focold) has today  presented a K2 million ($3,636) scholarship fund to 100 girls from four Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSSs) in Blantyre.

The CDSSs, namely Namwache, Mlomba, Chikumbe and Matindi, are from areas of Senior Chief Kapeni as well as Traditional Authorities Makata and Lundu.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony at Matindi CDSS, Focold Executive Director Jones Mwalwanda said the organisation will be supporting the girls in the 2015/2016 academic year through its Kholo la Nzeru project.

He said the K2 million  ($3,636) will carter for exercise books, uniforms, school shoes and fees for the first term. Mwalwanda said  similar donations will be made at the beginning of the second and third terms.

“According to a research we did, most parents in these areas encourage boys to continue with education than girls and poverty has fuelled the problem as they opt to spend the little money they have on their sons leaving their daughters bearing the negative impact of inadequacy of resources in the family.

“We will also provide bags of fertilizers, seeds and capital money to their parents as a way of empowering them economically so that they are able to provide to the girls other necessary essentials such as food,” explained Mwalwanda.

Speaking on behalf of his counterparts, Deputy headteacher for Matindi CDSS Everton Mhone advised parents to support the initiative by giving the girl-child enough time to study after classes.

Said Mhone: “Many girls are dropping out of school in this area due to lack of school fees and we are thankful to Focold for this kind gesture.”
