Football fraternity mourns Ngwira

Thousands of football supporters, officials, players and relatives attended the burial of Azam Tigers team manager Sammy Ngwira on Tuesday at Katimba Cemetery in Kanjedza Township, Blantyre.

Ngwira died on Sunday afternoon in Blantyre after a short illness.

In his eulogy, Azam Tigers vice-general secretary a Mr. Munyonga described   the death of Ngwira as shocking, saying his life had been taken in “the most cruel and violent way.”

“Death is a thief that has stolen a bright shining light from the nation,” said Munyonga.

“The entire nation is crying, Tigers FC is crying. We have all lost. Our condolences go to the family. Our hearts are bleeding.”

He said Ngwira’s death was a shock as he was fine on Saturday and was chatting with players on the club’s WhatsApp group.

“He was asking them where they would love to play thier game against Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium or Kalulu Stadium. Later on, hearing he is gone was shocking,” he said.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda  described the death of Ngwira as a big loss to the football fraternity.

“He has left a gap that cannot be filled in the football fraternity,” he said.

Ngwira, who was born on October 16 1967, is survived with a wife and two daughters.n
