The three have been identified as Fyness Nyirenda, (5), Mphatso Nyirenda, (10) who police said were grandchildren of politician-cum-poet Norman Nyirenda and Chikondi Lipende, (7).

Nyirenda confirmed the incident, saying there were four girls passing the road, but the driver could not stop because he was driving at a high speed.

He expressed disappointment that the driver had been released on bail after killing three children with alleged careless driving.

“My granddaughters died on the spot because of careless driving. Malawian laws are weak because such a crime needed a stiff penalty,” said Nyirenda.

Southern Region Police public relations officer Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the death of the three children.

Gondwa identified the driver as Ishmael Ibrahim Mussa, 30, from Kafuka Village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.

“The accident happened in the evening of last Friday and the three children sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot.

“Mussa was driving a Ford Ranger, registration MJ 6019. He is currently on bail and expecting to appear in court soon,” said Gondwa.
