Foreign cast absent as Professor saves Sand Fest

Sand Festival suffered a minor glitch as three foreign artists did not make the trip to the Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi at the weekend.

Missing in action were Zambia’s General Kanene, Mozambique’s Masukusi and Zimbabwe’ Banyana Bafana whose names featured prominently on the advertisements of the three-year festival begotten to celebrate the best of Malawian vibes.

In an interview, festival director Lucius Banda said the Mozambican dance troupe had sent their apologies on Sunday morning.

He also disclosed that their “trial” flirtations with the Zimbabweans came to nay because the group were deported for over-staying two months ago.

Soldier, however, said Kanene abandoned the festival in “an embarrassing way” because he was demanding twice the amount he had earlier agreed to.

In the absence of the trio, festival goers had to do with a five-star performance from South Africa’s DJ Professor and Eskido.

The Jezebel hit maker performed about seven songs in 45 minutes, but left the crowd completely mesmerised with the immensity of his stage work.

The South African stood head and shoulder above the rest to save the situation—thanks to his endless energy, movements, dance styles and contact with the audience.

So connected was the ‘Professor of Kwaito music’ with his audience that when he told them to dance, nobody was standing still in the audience.

He paid tribute to Lake Malawi, saying: I have performed twice at the club (Chez Ntemba) in Blantyre, but the venue of this festival is stunning and the people are happy to be part of this phenomenon. I will not hesitate to be here again next year.”

But Professor’s love story with Lake of Malawi was short-lived as he left for Blantyre 30 minutes after his moment of glitz and glamour.

They were supposed to fly out at 7pm on Sunday.
