Five foreign teams from four countries have registered to take part in an International Volleyball Bonanza in April in Mzuzu.

The teams are Mbeya Best-6 of Tanzania, Chalube and Super Select from Zambia, Wolves and St. George from Zimbabwe and Tchanwe University of Technology from South Africa.

The tournament has been organised by Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL) in partnership with AIA Business Consultancy and Kwaza PR.

Addressing a press conference in Mzuzu on Tuesday, tournament coordinator Killy Msukwa, who is also AIA Business Consultancy managing director, said the performance of local clubs in the international tournaments has been poor; hence the move.

He said: “The tournament is, therefore, aimed at improving the standard of play for local teams.

“Preparations are at advanced stage. So far, we have covered a number of logistics. The good

thing is that the companies that we have approached to partner us have given us positive feedback.

“Foreign teams have confirmed their participation and we are now waiting for local teams to confirm their participation by, among others, completing payment of K40 000 affiliation fee.”

Volleyball Association of Malawi general secretary Jairosi Nkhoma has applauded the organisers for the initiative which he said will go a long way in improving the standards of the game in the country.

“This is something that we need to applaud, it’s an initiative that needs everyone’s support. We cannot talk of developing the sport without international exposure,” he said
