Forex smuggler fined K600 000

Courts have fined Lufeyo Chitukula, who was two weeks ago arrested for being found in possession of foreign currency without supporting documents, K600 000 or in default serve two and a half years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL).

Chitukula was found with 96 200 South African rand (equivalent to K4 million) at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe, according to KIA Police spokesperson Sapulani Chitonde.

He said Chitukula, 35, was charged with two offences of attempting to externalise foreign currency and illegal possession of foreign currency contrary to the Exchange Control Act.

Chitukula, who was arrested as he was about to board a plane to South Africa on January 18 2016, has since paid all the fines. He comes from Tsanulani Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Njolomole in Ntcheu District. n
