Former Malawi national football team coach Alex Masanjala has been reported missing after his family failed to trace his whereabouts for the past five days.

Masanjala’s wife Constance said the former Flames coach left their home in Machinjiri, Blantyre on October 3.

“He left at around 5pm to have a hair cut at a barbershop not far from our home. There is no other barbershop in this part of Machinjiri, but since then he has not returned,” she said.

“He did not dress up for a long trip. He was wearing a blue Adidas T-shirt, a black presentation suit bottom and pair of slippers. We have since reported the matter to police who are assisting us in the search for him.”

Masanjala’s son in-law Wilberforce Longwe said they have asked  Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and National Football Coaches Association of Malawi to assist with the search.

“If anyone knows Mr. Masanjala whereabouts please report to the nearest police station,” he said.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said he was not aware that the coach was missing.

Masanjala has coached almost all the country’s top clubs in his career spanning over 20 years.

Apart from coaching the senior and Under-20 national teams, Masanjala has had stints with Civo United, Silver Strikers, Nyasa Big Bullets, Azam Tigers and the defunct Escom United.

His last job was with Blantyre United but he is currently unattached. n
