Former head of marketing sues FAM

Former Football Association of Malawi (FAM) marketing manager Dan Tambala, who was fired from the position in March this year, has sued the association for unlawful dismissal.

Both Tambala and FAM confirmed the development as they wait for a hearing at the Commercial Court in Blantyre.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said they were waiting to hear from their lawyers on the details of the case.

“Yes, we were served with the summons. Basically, he [Tambala] has sued because he claims that FAM dismissed him unlawfully,” Nyirenda said in an interview.

Tambala, who joined FAM in 2012, said he could not comment on the issue since it was in court.

“My case is in court so I cannot say much,” Tambala said in a short response.

Tambala was first suspended in September 2014 over Brazil World Cup tickets sales and later dismissed after a disciplinary hearing.

FAM signed a ticket allocation agreement with Fifa in which it undertook to make sure that the tickets go to the right individuals.

But the association faced Fifa sanctions for breaching the conditions by selling the tickets to touts rather than providing them to local supporters.

According to a letter from Nyirenda to Tambala dated September 14 2014, the bone of contention was that as head of marketing, Tambala failed to produce a full report.

“The ticket sales were done in a very transparent manner and FAM benefited from the sales but the executive committee has no report on the tickets sales and this is raising a lot of suspicion regarding transparency and accountability.

“It is my hope that you will treat this request with the seriousness it deserves and that the report will be submitted as per time stated above,” read part of the letter n
