Former Surestream coach opens football academy
Former Surestream Football Academy coach Honest Nkhwazi has opened Chisomo Football Academy in Kasungu District.
The now defunct Surestream Academy fired Nkhwazi in August 2015 alongside fellow under-12 and under-14 trainers Henry Solomon and Aubrey Magombo respectively after deeming them to be extra to requirement.
But Nkhwazi told The Nation yesterday that his bad experience at Surestream cannot hinder his passion to develop talent from the grass roots.
“I cannot let the coaching knowledge and skills I obtained through studies and experience go to waste,” he said.
“Moreover, Chisomo Football Academy, which is duly registered and affiliated to Football Association of Malawi [FAM], was established in response to parents’ wishes for their children to actively participate in soccer and become professionals that will go on top to represent the national team in different age-ranges and play for top football clubs in Africa and beyond.”
Nkhwazi said he is using his resources to run the academy.
“We are seeking financial sponsorship or material support from individuals, corporate companies and government to enable this dream become a reality,” he said.
The academy, based at Kasungu Police ground, has so far registered 100 students in under 11, 13, 15 and 19 age categories.
FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said he heard about the academy from the grapevine.
“Of course, I heard about this academy about a month ago. If indeed everything is alright about it, this is a welcome development.
“Nevertheless, I need more time to ascertain if what they do is in line with our football development agenda,” he said.
