Four artists to headline Malawi party in US

The Malawian community in Washing DC has organised an Independence Day party with four local artists scheduled to attend the event.

Two fashion designers, Lilly Alfonso and Mwai Namaona of Nzika Wear, as well as musicians Maskal and Lawi with his Mango Band have been invited as key performers at events running from July 4 to 6 in commemorating Malawi’s 50th independence.

“For the past 20 years, Malawi Washington Association (MWA), has been holding annual Independence Day extravaganza parties which feature three main events; a discussion forum, dinner and dance party and a family picnic. For years, many used to travel to the Washington DC area for the celebrations but as Malawian communities grew in other areas, the communities began to celebrate in their respective areas.

“This year, MWA teamed up with other Malawians organisations such as Malawians In Texas (MIT) and various individuals representing Malawian communities all over the US to form what we now know as Malawi Community USA. The organising committee known as Malawi@50 has tirelessly worked for months to fundraise and organise this year’s golden jubilee which is projected to be the largest gathering of Malawians in the US Diaspora ever,” explained one of the organisers Eddie Naming’ona.

The event, which will be held at the prestigious Fillmore Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland, will not only celebrate, but also empower the hundreds of Malawians attending the jubilee with information incorporated in the programmes planned for the weekend.

Said Naming’ona: “Discussion Forum will kick off with the movie, The Last Fishing Boat by Shemu Joyah and cover topics such as dual citizenship, immigration and insurance. The fashion show will feature Alfonso, Nzika Wear, Cellina Mlusu-Torimiro and Derovee Designs and this is an all Malawian line up.

“Music will be headlined by Lawi and his band, Maskal, Indika Band, Luis Chikuni, Ntambosi Chiwambo, Tiwonge Mhango, DJ Chazz and introduce Lundu VYBZ, a reggae band composed of kids of Khondo Lungu. Malawian DJs such as Ken Malomboza and Bright Nkhata’s daughter Agnes will also take part throughout the weekend.”
