Former Auction Holdings Limited chief executive officer Evans Matabwa, former Malawi Leaf company general manager Jimmy Kasamale, former Malawi Leaf company financial controller Francis Madona and Freight Shipping Company /Global Tobacco owner Arthur Madikhula who are accused of having defrauded Malawi Leaf Company over K20billion have been charged with six counts.

The four who were arrested on Tuesday, are appearing before Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa this morning where the State brought them to be formally charged.

The charges placed against the suspects include conspiracy to defraud, forgery, neglect of official duty, uttering of false documents, money laundering and theft.

The State has prayed for further detention of the suspects on the basis that it needs to conclude investigations. The state has asked for seven more days saying the investigations in question are complex and need time to be finalized.

However one of the defense lawyers Powell Nkhutabasa has objected to further detention of the suspects saying the interest of justice requires that the accused be released.

Nkhutabasa has since prayed for bail for the accused.
