Four die in Veep’s motorcade accident

Four people died yesterday in a road accident involving Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s motorcade and another vehicle. The crash happened near Mtima Woyera Catholic Church around Phalula (between Zalewa and Chingeni) in Balaka.

According to a report from Balaka Police Station, one of the cars on the convoy, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration BW 1732 collided head-on with a Toyota Vitz, registration BW 8173. 

The report said the driver of the Toyota Vitz lost control of his vehicle and swerved into the convoy and collided with the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 Station Wagon.

“Due to the impact, two women died on the spot while one man died upon arrival at Phalula Health Centre. The driver of the Vitz escaped with fractures on both hands and multiple cuts on his forehead,” reads the police report which also indicates that the driver of Toyota Landcruiser and a passenger sustained injuries.

Another person reportedly did while receiving treatment.

A social media post by the Vice-President’s press officer Pilirani Phiri indicated that Chilima was not hurt in the accident.

“The Vice-President was not affected in any way and he is fine,” said Phiri in the post.
