Four fly to Russia ahead of World Cup

Play Soccer Football Malawi defender Peter Paulo yesterday flew to Russia where he will take part in the sixth edition of the Football for Friendship (F4F) programme which will precede the World Cup.

The 12-year-old has been invited because of his exceptional soccer skills alongside aspiring journalist Rachel Phiri who has also been invited because of her outstanding writing skills.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) representative Benjamin Kumwenda and PlaySoccer Malawi technical director Dave Mpima will accompany the two.

F4F is an annual International children’s social programme implemented by Gazprom.

The goal of the programme is to cultivate in the younger generation important values and interest in a healthy lifestyle through football.

Football players at the age of 12 from different countries take part in the annual International Football for Friendship Children’s Forum, the Football for Friendship World Championship and the International Day of Football and Friendship.

Excited Paulo said God had answered his prayers.

“I can’t wait. I am passionate about soccer and to play against players from all over the world it will be a great experience. This will afford an opportunity for me to learn and improve. It is not every day that young people like me could travel to Russia to play football and watch the world cup,” he said.

Mpima said Paulo will play six-aside matches together with players from other countries.
