Four regional pool league champions will battle for domestic pool honours during the national league finals scheduled for Lilongwe on June 6, the Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) general secretary Saulos Thindwa has said.

“For the first time, we will use international standard of play as adopted in 2013 when we hosted the All Africa Pool Association Championship (Aapa) at Robin’s Park in Blantyre. This means that five players from each team as opposed to 12 will feature during the finals,” explained Thindwa.

“The five players from each team will play each other in the best of three frames with the one winning two frames being declared the winner. This will be exciting because teams will feature their best five players out of their best 12.”

The finals were earlier scheduled for April end, but shifted due to ‘some logistical’ challenges facing Southern Region.

Thindwa added that the national league games will be played on our pool tables that we purchased during the Aapa games “so that the players get used to them when we participate in international competitions.”

So far, Northern and Eastern regions have identified their respective champions while the Central and Southern regions are yet to identify their representatives for the finals.

The champion will get K500 000, runner-up (K300 000) and K200 000 for the third team.

“This is so because we want to enhance competition among the national finalists by creating a fighting spirit to win and also to add value to the finals’ atmosphere,” Thindwa concluded.
