Police in Chiradzulu have arrested a 21 year- old man suspected to have defiled and killed a four year-old girl.
Confirming the development, Chiradzulu police spokesperson Victoria Chirwa said the suspect Gift Elaton, on May 20 at around 6pm dragged the little girl into a nearby bush, defiled and left her unconscious while she was bleeding heavily.
“The girl and her seven year-old friend were sent by her grandparent to collect an empty bucket at a nearby borehole where they met the suspect.
After getting suspicious over the delay by the children to return home, the parents followed the girls and found the other girl sitting close to the borehole waiting for her friend. She told the elders her friend was at a nearby bush with Elaton. However, the parents found the victim lying unconscious and bleeding heavily from the private parts,” explained Chirwa.
According to Chirwa, the girl was rushed to Ndunde Health Centre where she was pronounced dead. She said post-mortem results revealed that the victim died of severe internal bleeding.
Following the incident, Elaton escaped from the village but police managed to arrest him on Monday.
He will appear before court soon to answer murder charges.
Police have since condemned the act and warned that perpetrators of such offences will face the wrath arm of the law.
Elaton hails from Malambo VAillage in the area of Traditional Authority Kadewere in the district.
