Fr Mwaungulu to be laid to rest on tomorrow

Malawi Catholic priest Fr Dr Robert Mwaungulu who passed away on Tuesday at St John’s Hospital in Mzuzu will be laid to rest on Thursday at Katoto Cemetery, Mzuzu Diocese has confirmed.

Chairperson for Diocesan priests in Mzuzu Diocese Father Philip Nkunika said on Wednesday Mwaungulu, 53, succumbed to diabetes and high blood pressure (BP) after a five-day illness.

He said: “We have lost a very important person in the church. As a diocese, we have few priests and his presence was very important. He will be greatly missed for his vast knowledge in canon law. We are sad at his departure.”

Nkunika said the funeral ceremony will start with mass at 10am at St. Peter’s Cathedral before moving with the remains to Katoto Cemetery for burial.

Fr. Mwaungulu was born on 10th March 1960 at Matete Village, T/AWasambo in Karonga District. He was ordained priest on August 5 1984. He did his studies in bachelors, master’s and doctorate degrees in Canon Law.

Until his death, he was the judicial vicar for Mzuzu Diocese, a position he held since 1991.

He has also been the secretary general for the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) between 1999 and 2005 and the executive director for Ecumenical Counselling Centre from 2005 up to August this year.
