France, Belgium pledge development projects

New ambassadors for France and Belgium on Tuesday presented their letters of credence to President Peter Mutharika with promises of some developmental projects to be carried out.

Speaking to journalists at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, French Ambassador Laurent Delahousse said he was happy to meet the President and that they discussed development issues which will help uplift Malawi.

He said: “I am grateful that I have met the President and we have talked on how France can help in developing this country. I will talk to French companies like I have done for Zimbabwe to come here and open their businesses. In so doing, it will boost the economy of the nation.”

Delahousse said his country will help Malawi in the tourism sector as it has beautiful natural resources which can attract more tourists.

He said France has given Malawi $12 million for geographic mapping to explore mineral resources.

In his remarks, the Belgium Ambassador Paul Cartier said his country is ready to bring investors to help develop Malawi.

He also said during his audience with Mutharika, they discussed human rights issues in particular on how Belgium can help people with albinism.

He also hailed Mutharika for sustainably scaling-up human rights culture.
