Frank ‘Facao’ Kamwendo

Most ambitious football stars want to be associated with winning teams and leagues; hence, dump losers. This happens because the players always want to remain in the limelight and have good chances of being called up for national team duties.

However, Frank ‘Facao’ Kamwendo did the opposite in 1986 when he dumped Premier League outfit Moneymen Stars to join First Division side Blantyre Print.

“Then, other Premier League teams such as Mighty Wanderers, Tigers FC and Hardware Stars wanted my services, but I opted for the First Division side because they also offered me a job,” said Kamwendo.

The 50-year-old claimed that he also decided to leave Moneymen Stars because they did not look after him when he broke his right leg during a Kamuzu Cup match at the Escom Ground.

“I sustained a compound fracture which left me incapacitated for almost eight months, but I was not well looked after. So, I had to move to another team,” said Kamwendo.

The father of four, who was nicknamed ‘Facao’ for his resemblance in skill to former Brazilian striker, cherishes Moneymen’s encounter against Tigers FC during the 1983 Press Cup quarter-final as his most memorable match.

“During that game, I scored a hat-trick for Moneymen to lead 3-0 at half-time. However, we were booted out of the contest 4-3 after Charles Phiri scored all the four goals for Tigers in the second half,” said the co-owner of Automobile and Technical Services in Blantyre.
