Rapper Penjani Kalua alias Fredokiss made history on Sunday when he successfully hosted a free show which attracted a huge audience in Ndirande Township, Blantyre.

It was the only rare afternoon which saw the rapper, performing for one hour and 49 minutes non-stop, proving his mantle as king of the Ghetto, Ghetto King-Kong as he is fondly called.

Unlike political rallies where people are ferried in truckloads, the crowd willfully flocked to the venue for their love for Fredokiss and his music.

Man of the moment: Fredokiss on arrival at the show

Ghetto youths made fashion statements by dressing up in all sorts of colourful outfits.

Enthusiastic fans patiently waited for Fredokiss whose act was slightly delayed due to a long-list of curtain-raisers who were given the platform to showcase and promote their talent. Mostly from Ndirande Township, many budding artists such as W-Twice and Noble Inkosi were some of those who performed.

However, neither Fredokiss’  delay nor the blazing sun dampened the ghetto youths’ morale and enthusiasm. Overpowering shouts of Fredokiss’ trademarks such as Fredo, Ntchana, Ghetto King-kong and Achina Fredo could be heard every time the hosts DJ Joy of Radio 2 FM and Junior C dared to ask the audience about who they wanted next on stage.

At one point, fans chanted “Ntchana waife kuti wawawa” as it was taking long for him to make an appearance on the congested scene.

As time was fast approaching 5pm, Fredokiss arrived on a three-vehicle convoy, which was heavily protected by organised security detail.

As fans’ pressure mounted to see their Ghetto master, Fredokiss appeared through his Toyota VX’s Sunroof, waving at his enthusiastic fans. Fredokiss’ appearance and interaction with his fans stirred a roaring ovation, which distracted some performers on stage.

Fredokiss was the main act whom fans were patiently waiting for, and he strolled on stage right after Gwamba. His performance was filled will ghetto life depicted from his songs Malamulo amu Ghetto to Breadwinner, which encourages hard work among young people. He performed alongside Ace Dirty, his long-time musical comrade.

“I love ghetto. This is the only way to express my love and give back to society,” said Fredokiss at the end of the show.

He said he also plans to hold a similar show in Lilongwe and Mzuzu under his newly-established Ghetto Gutter Entertainment Company.
