After successfully sponsoring the Central Zone Basketball’s (Cezobal) Junior league last season, Fun City, formerly Game Street, has returned with a K350 000 (about $1 029) sponsorship.

During the 2012/2013 season, Fun City which deals in computer games and other kids games in Lilongwe sponsored the league to the tune of K200 000 (about $588).

Speaking on Tuesday, Cezobal vice-chairperson Barlett Mafuleka said the new sponsorship is a big boost to Cezobal.

“I can confirm that Fun City is sponsoring our junior league for the second time in a row. They have increased the sponsorship by K150 000 (about $441). We are happy about this and we have promised them that we will use their money for the intended purpose,” said Mafuleka.

Meanwhile, the league has announced that for the first time in history it has incorporated basketball teams from all public schools in the Central Region.

According to Mafuleka, this has been done to improve participation and competition in the league. He said Bwaila and Chinsapo secondary schools have already registered to participate in the junior league which runs Under-14 and Under-18 categories.

He added that Cezobal men’s and ladies’ senior leagues will kick off next month.

“All is set for the kick off of the senior leagues, but there are new developments which we will be announcing in due course. What we can say at the moment is that we have divided the men’s league into Group A and Group B. Four teams that finished at the bottom are in Group B and have been joined by Dzaleka Camp, Kamuzu Barracks, Natural Resources College, SOS Magic and Dzenza Bucks,” said Mafuleka.

Lady Bucks and Lady Trojans have joined the ladies’ league.
