Over twenty women who came together to raise funds towards this year’s Mothers Fun Run (MFR) initiative have handed over a total of K2.4 million to (MFR) managers. The hand over ceremony took place on Thursday in Lilongwe.

The women agreed to raise at least K50 000 each within a period of a month although most of them have beaten the target. One of the participants, Charity Undi who works for Standard Bank managed to raise K144 000 after which her employer added K856 000 bringing her contribution to K1 million.

This has sent Undi over the moon, saying, “I am greatly humbled and honored to have my employer recognize the efforts I alongside other women made to raise funds towards the maternal health services for Chitipa and Mulanje women.”

Receiving the funds on Thursday on behalf of the women, Nation Publications Ltd (NPL) Bureau Chief for the center, Emmanuel Luciano, acknowledged the efforts of the women and said that the MFR initiative does not take that for granted.

He said that things are even better that a whole company, the Standard Bank, supported its employee by adding to her contribution towards the cause.

Said Luciano, “To have an organization such as Standard Bank coming in to support safe motherhood initiative is something that needs to be applauded and celebrated. We also want to take advantage to invite other well-wishers be it companies or individuals who want to see change in how safe motherhood is being tackled to come forward and support the initiative.”

Apart from Undi, the women were also represented by Alice Kanyama and Elizabeth Maliano.

This year’s MFR event is going to take place at Mulanje District Hospital on 6th November.
