G.Y Imports and Exports, a Lilongwe company that deals in ICT equipment, furniture and building materials has injected K3 million ($6000) towards an All-Star Basketball Tournament to be held in the capital city.

The firm’s managing director Griffin Kalua announced the news yesterday in Lilongwe.

He said he decided to do something after seeing lukewarm corporate support towards basketball.

“I am a basketball player myself. I have been into the sport since my secondary school days up to now.

“I am touched that despite the sport being popular, companies seem not willing to promote the sport,” said Kalua.

He said as a company with business interests across the country, it was proper to start with a national tournament rather than limiting it to a region.

“The All-Star brings the elite basketball players from all corners of the country together to showcase their best.

“This used to be a big event, but lately, due to lack of sponsorship, the importance of the event has dwindled.

We are reviving that,” said Kalua.

This year’s tourney will include men’s, women’s and junior categories.

“We are embracing all categories just to grow the game as is the case in other countries. We have already finalised logistical agreement with Basmal,” he explained.

“We are also funding accommodation and transport for all teams. We are trying to make this a success,” said Kalua.

The tournament will begin on July 25 at the African Bible College Gym, but the finals will take place at Civo Basketball Court on July 26.
