G4S employees stage sit-in

Group Four Security (G4S) employees on Tuesday staged a sit-in at their offices in Nyambadwe, Blantyre, over delays in receiving their salaries. The employees are also demanding an 80 percent salary increment.

G4S trade union chairperson Lawrence Kumonda claimed management told them that they would be receiving their salaries by 27th of every month, but that has only happened once— in December 2011.

Kumonda claimed the workers who received their salaries did not get their expected 80 percent increment that was supposed to be effected on August 1 this year.

“The workers who have received their money have First Merchant Bank [FMB] accounts, but their salaries have been cut. As for us, who have Malswitch accounts, there is no money in our accounts. We were also promised an 80 percent salary increment which has not been effected,” alleged Kumonda.

Efforts to talk to management proved futile.
