South Africa-based Malawian forward Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango could bag two Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards having been nominated for the Goal of the Season accolade which goes with a R50 000 (about K2.5 million).

The Orlando Pirates talisman already bagged the Golden Boot Award jointly with Highlands Park’s Namibian striker Peter Shalulile after tying on 16 goals which will see them pocketing R25 000 (about K1.25 million each).

Gaba received Goal of the Month Award for January

According to Supersport.com, the PSL has released a list of seven players who will go head-to-head for the individual Goal of the Season accolade.

His competitors for the award are Hlompho Kekana (Mamelodi Sundowns), Thabiso Kutumela (Maritzburg United), Thabo Nodada (Cape Town City), Lebogang Manyama, Samir Nurkovic and Dumisani Zuma (Kaizer Chiefs).

Goal of the Month winners automatically compete for the award and Gaba’s beauty against Polokwane City won the accolade for the month of January.

The goal, which came in the fifth minute, had all the hallmarks of theatre and art.

With the ball glued to his foot on the left flank, Gaba appeared to have little chance of beating his marker, but a touch of majesty that followed, was a wonder to behold.

He turned his opponent inside out and his deadly intentions became very clear. In a flash, he produced a sweet curling drive that gave Polokwane ‘keeper George Chigova not a prayer. Gaba went on to claim a hat-trick in that match.

Surprisingly, Mhango singles out his goal against rivals Kaizer Chiefs as his best for last season.

“All goals are good goals, but there are a few that even when you watch them again and again, they leave you saying “wow”. I would say my goal against Kaizer Chiefs was good. Oh, and the one against Polokwane City,” he was quoted as having said by www.orlandopiratesfc.com.

Voting for the award opened last week on the PSL website, www.PSL.co.za until midnight on Thursday and supporters will now have a direct say on who wins the prestigious award at the PSL Awards. The goal that receives the highest number votes will be announced as the Goal of the Season at the PSL Awards.
