Celtic had noted that while Mhango was able to play in the just ended season, it had been discovered that he was carrying an injury that might have compromised his form.
Mhango failed to replicate his form in the season as he managed just four league goals against nine for the previous season.
In an interview from his Free State base on Wednesday, Mhango said he will undergo surgery on May 29. Malawi host Zimbabwe in mid-June to start the Afcon qualifiers for group L.
“The indications are that, after the surgery, I will take some six weeks to recover. I have indeed been playing through pain. I just thought I could carry on, but the club says I should take advantage of the off-season break and deal with this injury,” explained Mhango.
“I know the Afcon qualifiers start mid next month. This means that while I could miss some,
“I should be able to play in others.”
