Veteran defender Joseph Gatros rose the highest to head in the equaliser that plucked Chikhwawa United from the jaws of defeat in a 1-1 draw with Tigers Reserves at the BAT Ground on Sunday.

Chimwemwe Tembo had put Tigers, coached by Gatros’ former Bakili Bullets colleague Meke Mwase, ahead in the late stages of this Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League.

As Tigers threatened to grab maximum points, Chikhwawa coach Dave Mpesi could only wonder as to how his charges had failed to apply his half-time instructions relayed through a tactical board; a rare practice in Malawi football.

But Gatros came to the rescue heading in from a corner kick much to the relief of Chikhwawa who have now drawn in two consecutive Premier Division games. Chikhwawa chairperson Owen Chomanika was relieved with the result.

“The coach asked for the purchase of the board and we obliged as it helps in relaying information better to the players. On the other hand, Gatros has brought competition in our defence. We have in four games conceded once,” said Chomanika who watched the proceedings from the terraces.

Other results in the Premier Division: Evirom 1 Zomba Air Wing 1; Polytechnic FC 2 White Bullets 2; White Eagles 3 Brave Warriors 2.
