GBV survivors empowered

The African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) has empowered gender-based violence (GBV) survivors from Traditional Authority Chikho in Ntchisi to venture into tailoring and farming.

In an interview, AICC Spotlight initiative project officer Fanny Nkhunda said they came up with the interventions to empower women economically.

“We want the women to be financially independent so that they should not fall victims of GBV as their spouses take advantage of their poverty to abuse them,” she said.

One of the survivors, Chikumbutso Samuel, said she will use the entrepreneurial skills she has acquired to go into farming.

She said: “We have learned to grow vegetables and raise livestock.

“Previously, I did not know that I could manage a garden, but now I have a tomato garden. I am able to buy basic necessities from the sales.”

Another beneficiary Tibeliya Banda said she grows vegetables through irrigation.

“I can now feed my children,” she said.

The project, which is phasing out this month, is funded by the Spotlight Initiative and is implemented in Dowa, Nkhata Bay, Mzimba and Ntchisi districts.
