General Alliance Insurance Company has bailed out five Blantyre-based local squash players who were about to miss the Malawi Open Squash Championships in Lilongwe today due to lack of transport, accommodation and food.

The three-day event will take place at Sunbird Capital and will be contested by players from South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi.

When presenting K150 000 to top-seed Aubrey Taulo, Chisomo Taulo, Chiyembekezo Matewere, James Chaphukira and Chisomo Mwathunga, General Alliance Insurance corporate development manager Hastings Kapesa said they decided to help because they felt it would be a shame for Malawi to host the international event in the absence of top local players.

“I believe it is important to motivate and empower our local athletes to gain international exposure. Athletes in individual sports disciplines like squash require regular support to make the country proud at international competitions,” said Kapesa.

A representative of the beneficiaries promised to appreciate the help by winning medals at the contest.
