Listen to this article

The General Alliance Insurance Limited Open Squash Tournament returns next month at the Blantyre Sports Club with sponsorship stakes now at K250 000.

Squash Malawi vice-president Gordon Benbow on Saturday said the open tournament will run for three days from April 4 in categories A and B.

There is also high possibility of a ladies section.

“We are trying to put more serious competitions ahead of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games,” said Benbow.

Defending champion in the men’s category, Aubrey Taulo, will certainly be the man to watch.

General Alliance officials were not readily available for comment as we went to press.

General Alliance Insurance Limited started sponsoring squash in 2009 at K150 000 (US$369) and Taulo and James Matewere have been among the most dominant players.

Squash is among the sports disciplines that will send athletes to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom.
