General Alliance Insurance Company has funded top seed James Matewere’s trip to Namibia for the Namibian Open Squash Championships.

The tournament will be hosted by the Buccaneers Squash Club from August 31 to September 2 2012.

General Alliance Insurance, which is the first firm to sponsor a squash player for an international event, presented K122 156 (about $490) to Matewere at its offices in Blantyre on Tuesday.

Matewere was expected to leave the country on Thursday.

Matewere also took part in Zimbabwe Open Championships in 2008 and in 2010. In 2008, he failed in the first round whereas in 2010, he finished in the quarter-finals.

General Alliance human resource development manager Steve Luwanda-Phiri said they decided to sponsor Matewere following his remarkable record in the sport.

“We believe in the youth and Matewere has proved to be one of the youth who are doing great in sports,” said Lwanda-Phiri.

The donation is a relief to Matewere who failed to travel to Zimbabwe for a similar contest early this month.

“I have been practising hard and I promise not to disappoint in Namibia. Count me in for good results,” said Matewere, who was accompanied by Squash Malawi’s youth development coach Julius Taulo.
