General Alliance registered 49 points to emerge winners of the Zomba Lions Club charity golf tournament at Zomba Gymkhana Club golf course on Saturday.

The duo, Richards Mkwapatila and Colonel Ian Chirwa, displayed a spirited performance to outwit 10 other companies that took part in the tournament. The stable-formatted tournament saw Mandevu Farm claiming second position on 48 points whereas Sawa Group were third with 46 points.

“We were solid and played our golf with determination. The secret lay on how we communicated between ourselves because we were like playing one handicap. My colleague plays 19 handicap and I play 12, so, somehow it means a combined handicap,” said an excited Mkwapatila.

He described the tournament as competitive with golfers uniting for one cause—fundraising for charity. Each of the top-three teams went away with a trophy plus certificates of recognition from the Zomba Lions Club.

In her remarks, Zomba Lions Club president Chipo Jamu hailed the golfers for contributing to the construction of a community-based child care centre (CBCC) in the district.

“We are looking for K13 million to construct a CBCC in village head M’dela in Senior Chief Mlumbe’s area in Zomba. But through this golf tournament, we expected to raise K2 million and I am proud to say we have collected closer to that figure [K1.7 million],” she said.

Jamu said her club will hold more fundraising activities to meet their target and provide pre-school quality education to the children in the district.

Village head M’dela thanked Zomba Lions club for responding positively to his appeal for a pre-school in his area.
