Girls Empowerment Network (Genet) Malawi, Carlsberg Malawi and Cordaid have launched a ‘Keeping Girls in School 100 percent’ campaign, at Lunzu Primary School in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre.

Speaking during the launch, Genet acting executive director Joyce Mkandawire said the project, which is expected to benefit 1 000 girls, seeks to address the challenges adolescent girls face during their menstrual cycle, while in class.

“In this project, we are providing sanitary pads with support from Carlsberg and Cordaid to 1 000 girls in 15 schools in the Southern Region. Carlsberg alone has pumped in over K3 million (about $7 500).

“We believe that with these sanitary pads girls aged between 10 and 14 years from poverty-stricken communities in 15 primary schools will be kept in school,” said Mkandawire.

Director of primary basic education in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Hyacinth Kulemeka, thanked Genet and Carlsberg Malawi for the initiative.
