Genetrix Ladies intensify preps for African Championships

Genetrix Ladies Hockey Club has intensified preparations for their first appearance at the African Club Championships slated for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from December 1 to 8.

During one of their training sessions last weekend, the team’s captain Lilian Kadango said they would like to make history at the continental showpiece.

“We will be [Malawi’s] first ladies’ team to contest at this event and we will leave no stone unturned in our preparations,” said Kadango.

She said they are deliberately training on an artificial turf because international hockey events are no longer conducted on natural grass.

The team’s coach Geofrey Biya has appealed to well-wishers to help them ahead of their trip as the K500 000 they recently raised is not enough.

“Companies are welcome to advertise on our jerseys or let us do some other activities for them. We desperately want this historic trip to materialise,” said Biya.

Last year, Genetrix men’s team contested at the African Club Championships in Lusaka, Zambia, where they finished last, on position 11. They failed to qualify for the 2012 event after failing to defend the 2011 Monolux 11-A-side Tournament.

Scorpions men’s team and Genetrix Ladies side will carry Malawi’s flag at the Zimbabwe contest for being the 2011 Monolux 11-A-side champions in their respective categories.
