Big Bullets assistant coach Gerald Phiri has turned down his appointment as assistant coach and team manager for the Under-17 national football team coach which will take part in the Zone VI Games to be staged in Zambia’s capital Lusaka from December 7-16.

Phiri, who was supposed to deputise Leo Mpulula, confirmed turning down the appointment by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), saying he is busy with club commitments.

“It is true I will not be able to take up the position because I am focused on helping my team [Bullets] win the Super League title. The other thing was that I was not comfortable with the other role of team manager.

“I have already communicated to FAM on my position,” said Phiri.

Bullets chairperson Malinda Chinyama also confirmed the development.

“As a club, our position is also that we are not going to release Gerald [Phiri] to join the Under-17 national team because he is a vital member of our technical panel.

“The chase for the league championship has reached a critical stage; therefore, we cannot do without him as he is an important member of the coaching panel,” said Chinyama.

FAM technical director Jack Chamangwana also confirmed the development, saying Phiri has since been replaced by former Escom United coach Charles Manda.

“He indeed communicated to say he will not make it due to club commitments and we could not force him. It is his decision.

“We have since replaced him with Charles Manda who has already reported for duties,” said Chamangwana.
