Germany pledges to assist Malawi fight hunger, poverty

The new German Ambassador Juergen Bosch has pledged his country’s continued support to Malawi.

Speaking after presenting his letters of credence to President Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Bosch said his country was committed to assisting Malawi in fighting hunger that the country has been experiencing over the years due to floods and drought.

He said his government would assist Malawi in its efforts to stop relying on maize, the country’s staple, and instead embrace other food crops given what the nation had gone through.

“I believe with the experience we have, we will break the cycle of food insecurity as people will not only depend on nsima, but diversify to other foods within the eight required balanced diet,” Bosch told reporters.

He said his country would also continue working in education and health sectors to improve sanitation and personal hygiene.

Bosch commended the bilateral ties that have existed between the countries since 1964. He replaces Peter Woeste.
