Get your 2016 goals right

Listen to this article

As you put the finishing touches to your 2016 goals, here are some thoughts on the different approaches to getting your goals right and motivating.

The roll over: There might be 2015 goals that you did not accomplish and want to roll into 2016. Reflect properly on whether goals you want to transfer are still relevant and that they are the right goals you wish to pursue.

The clean slate: The clean slate approach might be appropriate if you either fulfilled all your 2015 goals and are starting a new chapter or you had a poor year and want to start afresh. Make sure the clean slate is not an excuse for simply a wish list of everything you would like to do or think you should do.

The building on: This is taking what you achieved in 2015 to the next level. You’ll need to answer the question of what’s next and take stock of your resources and the commitments you need to make.

The outcome focus: This is where you set a target in the future and work backwards and set the milestones that will get you where you want to be by this time next year. You’ll need to be clear what you want to be different next year, where you’ll spend your time and what you’ll accomplish.

Whatever approach you take, make sure you are clear what will qualify as a successful year. Don’t create too many goals and overwhelm yourself. Write down your goals and make them bold, specific and measurable. Every week review progress and decide the next progress action to take.

Now take action: Decide and write down three career goals for 2016. n
