Gift of the Givers foundation on Friday donated 1500 kilograms (kgs) of maize flour and 2500 bales of soya pieces worth K1.5million (about $ 2 350) to Mulanje District Hospital to ease food shortage at the facility.

Speaking when he made the donation, programmes manager for the Gift of the Givers Ishmael Grant advised hospital authorities to also look for other means of securing food for the patients.20160408_122359_resized

“We understand that the hospital is struggling to feed its 400 in-patients. I was suggesting that chiefs locate a land for the hospital and mobilise villagers to do the farm work, we the NGOs can come in to provide farm inputs so that the hospital has food all year round,” suggested Grant.

Member of Parliament (MP) for the area (Mulanje South) Bon Kalindo thanked the organisation for the donation, urging others to emulate the good gesture.

Highlighting some of the challenges the hospital is facing, Kalindo called for concerted efforts in reducing the challenges.

“The hospital wards lack mosquito nets and beds, windows and glasses are broken, the walls are dirty, the ceiling is damaged. We need to join hands to fix all this,” he urged.

Kalindo promised to discuss with chiefs from villages surrounding the hospital on the suggestion that the hospital be provided with a farmland.
