Girl, 10, defiled, brutally murdered

A 10-year-old girl in Mzimba District was on July 15 brutally defiled and murdered by unknown suspects, The Nation has established.

Northern Region police spokesperson Maurice Chapola   on Friday confirmed the incident at Makantha Chirwa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba, adding police are investigating the matter.

Said Chapola: “On the fateful day, the girl left home for the school as usual, but did not return home after knocking off. Her parents searched for her to no avail.

“She was found dead between her home village and school on July 16 at around 6am. She had deep cuts on her head.”

He said post-mortem revealed the deceased was first defiled before being murdered.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati expressed shock at the defilement and killing of the girl who she said had dreams of becoming a productive citizen in future.

She said: “It is very regrettable. I am appealing to the community in Mzimba, that whoever has information about these suspects to report to police or call me on my Airtel line [0999510681].”

Livingstonia Synod Church and Society Programme child protection officer Hughes Chinkhuntha also described the killing as unfortunate.
