Gift Gondwe turned on a vintage display to see-off a field of 57 and win the United General Insurance (UGI) Company Limited Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Saturday.

Playing-off 12 handicap Gondwe had a net score of 67 playing three under-par to pip his runner-up and BSC golf captain Sam Mwale (13h/c) who had 68 net score playing two under par. Thoko Mkaveya (12h/c) was third, with a net of 69.

Gondwe attributed his victory to consistency, saying: “Consistency was my secret weapon. It is good to win a tournament organised by the masters of insurance.”

Twenty-three handicapped Joline Bapu Perreira was the winner in the women’s category, with 71 net score.

“I was inspired by my playing partners today, they really gave me a big push and I had seven pars and a birdie. As a client of UGI, it also felt good to win,” said Perreirra, who was also nearest to the pin on hole five.

Lilian Kawaza and Rashid Salimu had two clubs and each received K27 000. Diana Kambale had the longest drive in the women’s category on hole two.

In men’s category, Paul Araujo had the longest drive on hole 17 while Phillip Phambana was nearest to the pin on the first hole.

UGI chief executive officer Bywell Chiwoni pledged continued sponsorship, saying: “As UGI, we are here to stay, we have benefited a lot over the years that we have sponsored golf.

“Business wise, last year was a tough one, but I would like to thank all of you who stood with us.”

UGI business development manager Atupele Mangochi said the tournament was organised to inform their customers about their new AutoServe product, which is a basket of several insurance related covers and services packaged together to offer seamless protection to owners of high valued cars  and fleet. n
