Gondwe walks tall after schools athletics contest

Funny Gondwe walked tall on Sunday after she beat 30 other competitors to win the 800 metres Lupaso-Nkholongo Zone athletics competition in Mzuzu.

The Standard 8 pupil at Lupaso Primary School finished in 2:46 minutes.

“I am excited to win. The secret is that I train every morning as advised by my coach. This helped me keep my pace intact when I was approaching a hilly track and it was easy to have an edge over my competitors,” said the 15-year-old Gondwe.

Esther Nkhambule from Mtende Primary School clocked 2:50 minutes to come second while Leya Kamanga of Doroba finished third in 2:56 minutes.

In the male category, Fariam Banda of Doroba came top in 2:39 minutes. Nelson Zulu of Lupaso was his runner-up in 2:41 minutes whereas Vitumbiko Nkosi, also of Lupaso, came third in 2:42 minutes.

Speaking at the closing of the event, Mbeya said the aim of the competition was to unearth talent in schools that could ably represent the region in competitions.

“Most of the athletes we rely on at regional level are ageing, so we thought we should start grooming their replacements,” said Mbeya.
