Gift Gondwe shrugged off tight competition on Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) greens on Wednesday to excel in the 31-golfer Vege Delight Restaurant Ballpool.

Amassing a total of five pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey, he tied with his runner-up John Gift Mwakhwawa and third-placed Robert Coombes on 21 points.  However, he got the crown thanks to his 15-handicap, which was weaker than Mwakhwawa’s 13 and Coombes’ 11.

Gondwe (R) receives trophy from Makhecha

Perhaps the biggest surprise was not that he defied the odds to win the first golf competition at the BSC in 2017 but that he did it only a few days after taking glory in the Chip-inn Masters contest.

“My performance has improved fast and I would like to keep it that way,” Gondwe said after receiving his trophy from Vege Delight Restaurant marketing director Tarang Makhecha.

According to Makhecha, the seven-year-old vegetarian food restaurant organised the competition to appreciate the support they get from the golfing fraternity.

“We also wanted to announce that we have opened a new branch in Lilongwe and we will do the same in Mzuzu soon,” he said.

Meanwhile,  Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) will today hold its annual general meeting (AGM) and elective assembly at the BSC.

GUoM vice-president Hudson Kantwanje said all positions such as president, vice-president, general secretary and treasurer will be up for grabs.

“The assembly will start at around 6pm. All stakeholders are welcome,” he said. n
