Twenty two-year-old Lilongwe woman, Jennifer Duncan, got a rude awakening last Thursday when a woman she thought was a samaritan disappeared with her baby.

She said: “Please, bring back my baby back into my arms. Have a mother’s caring and empathetic heart. That baby is not yours, bring him back into these open arms, where he truly belongs!”

Teary-eyed Duncan cuts a pathetic figure as she makes a passionate plea to the anonymous person who dramatically triggered what she describes as the most shocking and traumatic experience in her lifetime; losing her baby to a thief.

The incident happened when she went to offer food and moral support to an expectant neighbour at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe.

Upon arrival at the hospital’s inner gate, she was told that mothers or guardians carrying babies were not allowed beyond that point.

Said Duncan: “However, my colleagues expressed fear that they would not recognise the patient, who was new in their residential area.

“It was at this point that a dark, slim and middle-aged woman, with short hair, stepped forward, from among the gate crowd.

She offered to assist, saying: “If you hurry up and visit the patient within a few minutes, I can hold the baby for you, for I will be right here until you return.”

When Duncan returned, the woman had disappeared with her baby.

Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula confirmed receiving a report about the missing child, adding that investigations are underway.
