Government, Fifa hope TDs’ course will improve football

Government has expressed optimism that the Fifa-sponsored technical directors’ course currently underway in Blantyre will help improve local football as Malawi will tap knowledge from other countries.

The training has attracted technical directors from 14 eastern and southern Africa countries.

Presiding over the official opening of the course, Minister of Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia hoped that the training was being held at the right time as government is working to improve sports at grassroots level.

“We are training sports directors who can help improve sports from the grass roots. I strongly believe that the Malawi representative at the training will impart the knowledge gained in other sports officials,” she said.

At the training, Malawi is being represented by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) technical director John Kaputa.

On his part, Fifa head of education and technical development Jurg Nepfer said the training has been organised to help nations in how to improve football in the targeted countries.

“We believe that after the training, the technical directors will be able to develop programmes that are able to improve the technical aspect of the game,” he said.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said Malawi was privileged to host such a high-profile course which is being held for the first time.

“It shows that Malawi has the trust of Fifa and through this training, we stand to gain in terms of sharing notes by the participants and through the knowledge that will be gained,” he said. n
