Govt applauds Illovo Malawi for investing in staff

Government has applauded Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited, the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed sugar manufacturer, for investing substantially in training and development of its workforce.

Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Principal Secretary Bestone Chisamile said it is only highly trained people who can contribute significantly to the success of companies.

“We know some companies have been tempted to stop or reduce the investment in training and staff development. It is encouraging to note that Illovo stands out by continuing to invest in staff development initiatives,” he said at the close of a managers training.

Chisamile advised the trainee managers to give Illovo the much-needed competitive edge as research findings have shown that it is only competent people who can contribute significantly to any company’s success.

Illovo Malawi managing director Ray de Allende said the success of the company can be attributed to a number of factors, ranging from good socio-political and economic environment and enormous support from the government and various stakeholders.

He said apart from employing over 11 500 people across its operations, Illovo operations in Malawi are of considerable benefit to the economy, adding that  many local industries are dependent upon Illovo for their sustainable enterprises.

“The livelihoods of many more families are improved through the income generated through indirect employment with Illovo Sugar Malawi.  In the supply chain, we also have noted the growth of out-grower enterprise,” said Allende.

Illovo Sugar has two estate operations, one in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota and the other in Nchalo, Chikwawa.

Two weeks ago, the company celebrated 50 years of operations at Nchalo.

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited also launched new packaging of its product as part of its diversification to cater for all classes of people. n
