Government has committed to develop the heroes’ acre in Mzuzu after stakeholders condemned the current state of the place.

The place looks deserted and some people are encroaching it and using part of the land for grazing animals.

During the burial of Professor David Rubadiri last Saturday, CCAP Synod of Livingstonia general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo asked politicians to prioritise the development of the acre.

The acre has graves of former minister Rose Chibambo and Rubadiri

He specifically asked Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe, Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango, Speaker of National Assembly Richard Msowoya, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera, MCP second vice-president Harry Mkandawire and Mzuzu  City legislator Leonard Njikho to lead in improving the place.

Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Grace Chiumia said her ministry will soon develop the place by erecting a museum and offices for Departments of Arts and Culture.

She said the ministry will flush out encroachers and construct a fence to protect the area.

“It will not just be used for burying people. We want a museum for the Northern Region to be constructed here. There will also be offices for arts and culture here. This place will change significantly,” she said.

On his part, Gondwe pledged to support the development, saying he has already been in touch with Chiumia on the matter. n
